Sandra Bullock had announced her intention to take a “pause” from acting more than a year before losing her long-term partner Bryan Randall, whose death was announced on Tuesday after a three-year private health battle.
Randall, a photographer, and the Hollywood actress had been in a relationship for eight years.

His family announced the 57-year-old’s death in a statement, revealing that he had had a rare neurological condition called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS – which is commonly known as Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in Australia.
“It is with great sadness that we share that on August 5, Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS,” a family statement read.
“Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honour his request.
“At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan.”
In March last year, Bullock gave an interview at the SXSW Festival in Texas to promote her movie The Lost City, revealing she was going to put her acting career on hold for a while.
At the time, she said the reason for taking a break was to focus on her two adopted children, Louis, 13, and Laila, 10.
“I would love to (make more films) when I’m done being a mum,” she said.
“I’ll get back to it.
“I don’t know when.
“Probably when they’re teenagers, 16 or 17-year-olds.”
Bullock’s most recent role was Bullet Train with Brad Pitt, which was released last year.
The death of her partner has left Hollywood in shock.
ALS is a rare incurable neurological disease that affects motor neurons, weakening muscles and impacting physical function, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders.
Bullock had never talked about her partner’s condition publicly.
The pair began dating in 2015 after Randall was employed to photograph Bullock’s son Louis’ birthday party and went “official” at Jennifer Aniston’s wedding to Justin Theroux in August that year.
In an interview on Red Table Talk in 2021, Bullock opened up about their relationship, revealing that Randall had an adult daughter from a previous relationship.
“I found the love of my life,” she said.
“We share two beautiful children – three children, (Randall’s) older daughter,” she said.
“It’s the best thing ever.”
She also talked about why they hadn’t married.
“I don’t wanna say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother,” she said.
“I don’t need to be told to be ever present in the hardest of times.
“I don’t need to be told to weather a storm with a good man.”
She described Randall as “the example that I would want my children to have,” adding that he was devoutly Christian.
“I don’t always agree with him, and he doesn’t always agree with me. But he is an example even when I don’t agree with him,” she said.
Prior to meeting the photographer, Bullock was married to entrepreneur Jesse James.
The pair wed in 2005 but divorced five years later.
