Romelu Lukaku will return to Chelsea on Tuesday – 24 hours after Mauricio Pochettino’s squad have flown to the United States for the club’s pre-season tour – with Juventus now leading the race to sign the striker.

It had been hoped that a deal for Lukaku to leave Chelsea permanently would have been agreed before he had to report back at the club’s Cobham training ground, but that has not been possible.

Inter Milan, who had been regarded as the favourites to re-sign Lukaku, are now rated to be out of the race completely after having two bids rejected for the Belgian.

Reports in Italy have claimed that Inter were angered by Lukaku leaving the door open to a move to their Italian rivals Juventus this summer, having spent weeks negotiating with Chelsea.

Lukaku finished last season strongly at Inter, but was still used as a substitute on a number of occasions and did not start the Champions League final defeat by Manchester City.

That is thought to have contributed to Lukaku’s willingness to listen to an offer from Juventus, who ideally want to sell Dusan Vlahovic before committing to a permanent deal for Lukaku.

Selling Vlahovic first is not necessarily imperative and Lukaku and his advisors have around two and a half weeks while Chelsea’s squad are in the US to try to clinch an agreement with Juventus.

Roc Nation Sports International hit back at reports from Italy that they were considering splitting from Lukaku, following the breakdown in talks with Inter, by posting a message on social media that read: “Fake news and irresponsible reporting must stop. Focus on the facts and the truth.”

It is understood that Roc Nation will continue to work with Lukaku’s lawyer Sebastien Ledure and the player’s family to secure the best resolution to his future.

Chelsea initially requested Lukaku return last Wednesday, but that was pushed back to Monday to try to allow time for him to be sold. He is now returning on Tuesday and will train until his future is decided.
