Inter Milan’s participation in the final of the Champions League will delay talks over Romelu Lukaku’s Chelsea future.

Telegraph Sport first reported that Lukaku will be asked whether or not he wants to be part of Chelsea’s fresh era under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has returned to England from Barcelona ahead of the club’s official announcement.

Pochettino, who is now back in London, is thought to be open to the idea of working with Lukaku and reintegrating him back into the Chelsea squad, but the Belgian will have to tell the club he is ready to give it another go.

Italian reports have claimed that Lukaku would rather stay at Inter, but that the club may not be able to afford to keep him for a second season on loan on the same terms or re-sign him permanently.

Talks will be held at the end of the season, but Inter’s campaign has now extended until June 10, when the club will compete in the final of the Champions League.

The result of that game could also have a bearing on Lukaku’s future, which is one of the biggest issues facing Chelsea this summer with the club in desperate need of starting next season with a recognised goalscorer.

Lukaku has experienced a challenging season on loan at Inter and did not start either leg of the Champions League semi-final tie against AC Milan. But he made substitute appearances in both games and has scored 14 goals in his last 22 appearances for club and country.

Confirming that talks on Lukaku’s future will not be held until after the Champions League final, Micahel Yormark, president of Roc Nation Sports International who look after the 30-year-old, said: “It’s too early to tell (what will happen).

“Romelu is in the final of the Champions League. Once the season’s over, we’ll all sit down and assess where he is and what the opportunities are. We’re just so thrilled that he’s healthy and that he’s playing well, and then we will decide all of this season after the season’s over.”

Chelsea have privately dismissed claims made by the agent of Julian Nagelsmann that the German was the club’s original top target to permanently succeed Graham Potter.

Nagelsmann was among the shortlist of candidates, but, as revealed by Telegraph Sport, warmth within the club grew for Pochettino before the 35-year-old dropped out of the running.
