Italian journalist Riccardo Trevisani believes that misses in front of goal haven’t been the worst mistakes Romelu Lukaku has made.
Speaking on Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews, the journalist suggested that leaving Inter Milan to join Chelsea, and then burning his bridges with the Nerazzurri this summer, have been his greatest errors in recent years.
Over the past few seasons, there has not been a dull moment with Lukaku.
In his first two seasons, the Belgian was outstanding.
Lukaku led the Nerazzurri in both goals and assists in the 2020-21 season, firing the team to the Serie A title. He was named as the Serie A player of the season.
But that summer, Lukaku made a blockbuster move to Chelsea in the Premier League.
Things never quite went according to plan for the striker in the English capital however. Despite his enormous fee, Lukaku was never able to replicate his Nerazzurri form at Stamford Bridge.
Last summer, Lukaku secured a shock return to Inter, on loan from Chelsea.
Over last season, the 30-year-old struggled with injury, but in the final weeks of the campaign looked to be somewhere back to his best.
Therefore, it looked as though Inter would bring Lukaku back. Even on a permanent basis from Chelsea.
Trevisani: Romelu Lukaku Mistakes Worse Than His Misses In Front Of Goal
This summer, the story between Inter and Lukaku turned into a soap opera.
At the centre of it all has been the Belgian’s negotiations behind the Nerazzurri’s back. These caused Inter to abruptly and angrily pull the plug on talks to bring the player back.
And for his part, Trevisani believes that this was an even worse error than something else Lukaku has become unfortunately known for – his misses in key moments.
Whether for Belgium at the World Cup, or for Inter in the Champions League final, Lukaku has developed a bit of a habit of failing to find the back of the net on the biggest stage.
But for Trevisani, the 30-year-old’s behaviour of the pitch has been even worse.
He argued that “”Lukaku made a mistake two years ago when he went to Chelsea after having sworn eternal love at Inter and declaring himself king of Milan. ”
“The Belgian has made a series of incredible mistakes over the past couple years,” he added.
“And they’ve been even worse than his mistakes in front of goal.”
