Sandra Bullock is going through a difficult period as she mourns the loss of her partner of 8 years, Bryan Randall, who passed away at the age of 57 on August 5, after a 3-year struggle with ALS.

In a statement shared by Bryan Randall’s family with PEOPLE magazine on Monday, they expressed, “With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Bryan Randall on Aug. 5, after his valiant three-year fight against ALS.” Bryan had chosen to keep his battle with ALS private, and his family further conveyed, “Early on, Bryan made the decision to keep his ALS journey personal, and those of us who cared for him did our utmost to respect his wishes.”

His family added, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the tireless medical professionals who guided us through this challenging illness, as well as to the incredible nurses who stood by our side, often putting their own families on hold to support ours.”

Finally, the family shared, “During this time, we kindly request privacy as we navigate the process of grieving and come to terms with the heartbreaking reality of bidding farewell to Bryan.”

As per the ALS Association, ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that impacts nerve cells in both the brain and spinal cord. ALS leads to a loss of muscle control, and its effects worsen over time.

Gradually, it affects the muscles necessary for essential functions like eating, breathing, moving, and speaking. Presently, no cure has been found for this devastating disease.

Bryan Randall, the partner of American actress Sandra Bullock, hailed from Portland and was a skilled photographer who operated his own venture, Bryan Randall Photography. Prior to this, Randall had a successful career as a model.

His portfolio included campaigns for prominent luxury brands such as Yves Saint Laurent and Hugo Boss.

Sandra Bullock, aged 59, crossed paths with Randall in January 2015 at the birthday party of her son, Louis, where he was working as a photographer. The celebrated actress had adopted Louis in 2010, followed by her daughter, Laila, in 2015.

Over time, their connection deepened, and they made their relationship public a few months later, appearing together at the wedding of Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux in August of that year. In October 2015, the couple made their first public appearance on the red carpet during the premiere of Bullock’s movie “Our Brand Is Crisis.”

Their relationship flourished while maintaining a private profile. The couple parented three children together, including Bryan’s older daughter.
