Ipswich Town started their season with a statement win over Sunderland but there’s still room for new signings to be made at Portman Road.
Ipswich Town have added four signings to their ranks so far this summer. Cieran Slicker, Jack Taylor and Omari Hutchinson have arrived while George Hirst joined permanently following last season’s loan.
As said before though, there is space in the squad for some more new faces and there could be some departures yet too. Here, we update you on all the Town transfer rumours and assess the likelihood of each deal materialising…
Adam Armstrong
The links with Southampton’s Adam Armstrong first emerged earlier this summer and reporter Alan Nixon has said on his Patreon he remains a target for the ambitious Tractor Boys heading into the latter stages of the window.
How likely is this one?
While there can be no doubting Ipswich’s ambition, Armstrong remains part of Russell Martin’s plans. He started on the opening day of the season and scored the opening goal, albeit a fortunate one. Southampton have shown this summer and they won’t be forced into cashing into their players so they will likely stand firm on Armstrong if Ipswich do come in.
Axel Tuanzebe
Centre-back is one area of Kieran McKenna’s squad we could see strengthened and it was said by TEAMtalk that Town were ready to move on Tuanzebe after he left Manchester United this summer.
How likely is this one?
Given McKenna and Tuanzebe’s previous time together at Old Trafford, this looks feasible. As a free agent, its would be a fairly smooth deal to get done too. It wouldn’t be all that surprising if Tuanzebe ends up as an Ipswich Town player this summer.
Craig Cathcart
Another defender to have been linked with Ipswich this summer is veteran Craig Cathcart. He’s still without a club after his contract at Watford came to a close at the end of last season.
How likely is this one?
The importance of Championship experience can’t be played down and Cathcart has that in droves. He’d be a solid addition and again, as a free agent, it shouldn’t be a tough deal to get done if the interest is genuine.
However, given that this rumour emerged a while ago, you get the feeling that Ipswich would have done a deal a while ago if they wanted to.
Elkan Baggott
Last but not least, a potential exit has been reported for Singapore international Elkan Baggott. The promising defender is rumoured to be a Stevenage loan target.
How likely is this one?
Despite the need for a centre-back, Baggott will be best suited to a loan elsewhere. He caught the eye in pre-season and certainly has a future with Ipswich Town, so a temporary spell in League One could do wonders for his development.
