Inter Milan vice-president Javier Zanetti expressed his vast disappointment in the behavior of Romelu Lukaku this summer.

The Belgian spent two successful campaigns at the Giuseppe Meazza before making a mega-money switch to Chelsea in 2021.

Last summer, the Nerazzurri managed to bring him back on loan following his desperate pleas to escape from Stamford Bridge.

This summer, Inter were working with the Blues over a permanent transfer, but later found out that the striker was simultaneously negotiating with arch-rivals Juventus. Lukaku also didn’t answer calls from Nerazzurri officials.

Therefore, the legendary Zanetti revealed his great disappointment towards the 30-year-old and his strange demeanor.

“For what Inter had done to him, we expected a different type of behavior from both the man and the professional,” said Zanetti in a long interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInter1908.

“He has the right to go wherever he wants. But he could have revealed his decision at the right time.

“However, no one is bigger than the club. So when building a team,  you always have to consider who you put in the dressing room.”

On another note, the legendary Inter Milan captain will turn 50 on Thursday. He took this opportunity to recall his illustrious spell at the club.

“Of these 50 years, I spent 28 years in Italy, at Inter, which is a major privilege. I am a father and a happy professional.

“I also have to thank the gratitude of the people. I’m not just talking about the Inter fanbase, but also the club’s opponents.”

“At this stage, I’m still working at the club and for the club, as always. For anyone who wonders ‘what is Zanetti doing?’, I’m always behind the scenes.

“I try to be helpful and make things work. The corporate, the coach, the sporting sector, everyone knows I’m here when needed.

“I’m also collaborating with UEFA and FIFA, which is a part of my role. I’m always thinking about the growth of the club.

“I’m also trying to improve myself. To continue a career you need to prepare and learn. In a certain sense, training and struggling.

Zanetti had to elaborate on the difference between his side that won the Champions League final in 2010 and last season’s version that lost against Man City.

“I was expecting a final like the one that ensued, played on an equal footing. But we couldn’t exploit our chances and weren’t lucky enough. That’s what was missing, but we are proud of the team.”

The 50-year-old also compared current Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi to former Nerazzurri boss Gigi Simoni.

“Inzaghi’s main characteristic is tranquillity and serenity in difficult moments. He has the strength not to doubt his own work. Gigi Simoni possessed the same calmness.”

Zanetti also gave his blessing to his compatriot Lautaro Martinez who has recently inherited the captain’s armband.

“Lautaro took the right steps with humility. I’m happy with his path. He must confirm his leadership by taking even more responsibility.

“He has a great sense of belonging and knows how to be a role model. This is what a captain does, leading by example.”

The club icon also revealed his toughest opponent and his most underrated teammate.

“Messi and Ronaldo are in another category. So I say Zidane. He was unique, he hid the ball from you, with intelligence, class and a strong physique

“Recoba is the most underrated. He didn’t express his great talent. Pirlo was great elsewhere, but only because he wasn’t at Inter at the right time.”

Finally, Zanetti insists that Inter wouldn’t be the same without being slightly Pazza (crazy).

“It wouldn’t have been Inter otherwise. This club is so romantic and unique. I’ve never thought of it as a negative trait. On the contrary it makes us different, capable of achieving anything.

“We have no limits in this madness. Anyone who passes through this club always thinks back at Inter with joy, hoping to come back.

“Managements can come and go, but we mustn’t lose our identity. This is what I’m fighting for.”

“As an old man, I see myself still active, always ready to give everything for Inter.

“For me, Inter will always be there. Even if I don’t have a role. I can’t take these colors off.”
