Mitsubishi revealed the exterior design of a new and yet-unnamed SUV during a special event in Indonesia while announcing the commencement of pre-orders before its official premiere, scheduled for August 10. The new model, which draws inspiration from the Mitsubishi XFC concept showcased in 2022, is specifically destined for the ASEAN markets. Production will take place at the company’s Krama Yudha plant in Indonesia, with the first deliveries scheduled to commence in November 2023.
The production version remains faithful to the concept’s design, with a few notable changes, such as adopting smaller-diameter wheels, conventional mirrors, and door handles, along with redesigned skid plates without the fancy Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). Furthermore, a new pattern for the grille and slightly different LED graphics for the Y-shaped lighting units have been introduced. Despite these adjustments, the new model retains the adventurous stance and muscular body, carried over from the XFC concept.

The new model is poised to compete in the booming compact SUV segment, boasting dimensions of 4,390 mm (172.8 inches) in length, 1,810 mm (71.3 inches) in width, and 1,660 mm (65.4 inches) in height. Although the prototypes feature blacked-out windows that hinder us from peering inside, the company has refrained from publishing any interior shots. Nevertheless, Mitsubishi assures prospective buyers of a “spacious cabin” with “versatile storage spaces,” while confirming the inclusion of a Yamaha audio system featuring coaxial 2-way speakers and tweeters.
Mitsubishi has opted to withhold the detailed specifications and the name of the model until its official debut. However, they have confirmed that the SUV will be equipped with a 1.5-liter engine paired to a CVT gearbox, directing power to the front wheels. Despite being a front-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicle, its generous ground clearance of 8.7 inches (222 mm) and the availability of four driving modes (Normal, Gravel, Mud, and Wet) should enable it to handle rough surfaces and flooded roads. Regarding the powertrain, there is a possibility that it might feature the non-electrified naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter unit from the Mitsubishi Xpander, which delivers 103 hp (77 kW / 105 PS) in the crossover minivan.

The signs that read “New Xcitement” and the prominent big X displayed behind the prototypes on the exhibition floor hints towards a naming strategy similar to the Xpander. The rumors circulating about the the SUV being called the “Xforce” align with the previous XFC concept, further strengthening this speculation. It appears that Mitsubishi might be aiming to create a cohesive and recognizable branding strategy for their SUV lineup, following the success of the Xpander.
Full details about the new Mitsubishi SUV will be revealed at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) on August 10. The company already sells the similarly-sized and electrified Renault-derived Mitsubishi ASX B-SUV in Europe, indicating that the new model might be exclusively available in ASEAN markets.
